Traffic Work Zone Equipment — Frequently Asked Questions
The MUTCD (Section 6F) specifies minimum cone heights based on road speed:
- 18" cones: for non-roadway and parking lot applications only — not for use on public roadways as primary traffic control devices
- 28" cones: minimum requirement for roadway work zones where the posted speed limit is below 45 mph
- 36" cones (minimum): required on freeways, expressways, and other roads with posted speed limits at or above 45 mph
The Traffix 42" Grabber (Looper) Cone in this category meets and exceeds the 36" MUTCD requirement for high-speed roadway work zones. Cones must be orange; for nighttime use, cones must meet MUTCD retroreflectivity requirements with appropriate collar sleeves.
A retractable cone bar stretches between two adjacent traffic cones to create a continuous visual and light physical barrier, closing the gap between individual cones. This is particularly useful for:
