Fall Protection
Fall Protection Equipment & Safety Systems
Falls are the leading cause of fatality in construction and a top-cited OSHA violation across general industry. OSHA 29 CFR 1926.502 (construction) and 29 CFR 1910.28 (general industry) require fall protection systems for workers at heights of 6 feet (construction) or 4 feet (general industry) above a lower level. A compliant personal fall arrest system (PFAS) consists of three components working together: an anchor point, a connecting device (lanyard or SRL), and a full-body harness. All components must meet ANSI/ASSP Z359 standards and be used as a coordinated system — no single component can be substituted without evaluating compatibility with the others.
Safe-Fast stocks a complete range of fall protection equipment across six subcategories, primarily from SafeWaze and French Creek Production:
- Harnesses — full-body harnesses in vest, construction, and ironworker configurations, including the SafeWaze PRO+ Vest FS185, PRO+ Flex Vest FLEX185, PRO+ Flex Ironworkers FLEX270, PRO+ Flex Construction FLEX360, and the French Creek STRATOS Construction Harness. Sizes from S/M to XL/XXL; rated to 420 lbs.
- Retractables (SRLs) — self-retracting lifelines for ladder climbing, leading edge, and general fall arrest. Includes the SafeWaze Lodestar 50' Cable SRL Class 1 and the Latitude HD 11' SRL-P (Class 1) and Latitude Edge 11' SRL-P (Class 2) personal SRLs.
- Lanyards — shock-absorbing and non-shock-absorbing lanyards in single-leg and twin-leg (100% tie-off) configurations. Includes the French Creek Rope Grab F1B-1251 for use on vertical lifelines.
- Anchorages — concrete, beam, and toggle bolt anchors for a wide range of structural anchor points. Includes the Guardian Beamer 2000 Beam Anchor (I/H-beam, foot-level or overhead) and the SafeWaze Toggle Bolt Anchor 023-4108 for steel and hollow-core concrete applications.
- Guardrails — portable and fixed guardrail systems for leading edges, rooftops, and floor openings where a passive fall prevention solution is preferred over a personal fall arrest system.
- Specialty — includes the SafeWaze Quick-Adjust Trauma Relief 022-6047, worn over the harness after a fall to relieve suspension trauma and promote circulation until rescue can be completed.
Safe-Fast also provides fall protection system inspection services — OSHA requires that all personal fall arrest equipment be inspected before each use by the user and periodically by a competent person. For system design, rescue planning, or bulk orders, call 1-800-723-3620.

Fall Protection — Frequently Asked Questions
A compliant personal fall arrest system under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.140 and 1926.502 consists of three coordinated components:
- Anchorage (anchor point): a structural element capable of supporting at least 5,000 lbs. per attached worker, or designed by a qualified person with a safety factor of 2. Examples include concrete anchors, beam anchors, and roof anchors.
- Body harness: a full-body harness (not a body belt — prohibited for fall arrest) worn to distribute fall arrest forces across the thighs, pelvis, chest, and shoulders. Must meet ANSI Z359.11.
- Connecting device: the element that connects the harness to the anchor point. This is either a shock-absorbing lanyard (limits arrest force to 1,800 lbs.) or a self-retracting lifeline (SRL).
All three components must be compatible, properly inspected, and used together as a system. Mixing components from different systems without verifying compatibility is a compliance risk.
Under ANSI/ASSP Z359.14, self-retracting lifelines are classified by intended application:
- Class 1 SRL — designed for non-leading-edge applications where the anchor is always directly overhead and a free fall of 2 feet or less is expected. The SafeWaze Lodestar 50' SRL and the Latitude HD 11' SRL-P (Class 1) are Class 1 devices.
- Class 2 SRL — designed for leading edge applications where the worker may be working at the same level as or below the anchor, creating potential for free falls greater than 2 feet. The Latitude Edge 11' SRL-P (Class 2) is purpose-built for this use case with an integrated energy absorber designed for leading edge falls.
Using a Class 1 SRL on a leading edge is a serious safety hazard — the cable can contact the edge and sever during a fall. Always verify the SRL class matches the application.
Suspension trauma (also called harness-induced pathology or orthostatic shock) occurs when a worker is suspended in a harness after a fall and remains motionless for an extended period. The leg straps restrict venous return from the lower limbs, causing blood to pool in the legs. This can lead to unconsciousness and cardiac arrest — even if the worker survived the initial fall without serious injury. Symptoms can begin within minutes.
The SafeWaze Quick-Adjust Trauma Relief 022-6047 attaches to the harness and provides stirrups for the suspended worker to stand in, relieving pressure on the leg straps and restoring circulation until rescue is complete. OSHA requires that a rescue plan and means be in place before workers use a PFAS — suspension trauma management is part of that plan.
Fall protection equipment must be immediately removed from service and destroyed after any fall arrest event — it must never be put back into use, even if it appears undamaged. The energy absorber in a shock-absorbing lanyard deploys (and cannot be reset), and internal structural damage in a harness or SRL may not be visible.
Equipment must also be removed from service if any of the following are present upon inspection: cuts, fraying, or abrasion to webbing; bent, cracked, or corroded hardware; damaged or missing label; a deployed shock pack; or any deformation of connecting hardware. OSHA requires pre-use inspection by the user before every use, plus periodic inspections by a competent person. Safe-Fast offers fall protection system inspection services to support this requirement.
Harness selection depends on the work type, D-ring configuration, and range of motion needed:
- Vest harness (FS185, FLEX185) — the standard choice for general construction, roofing, and maintenance. Single dorsal D-ring, vest-style fit. The FLEX185 uses ergonomic flex webbing for improved range of motion over standard polyester webbing.
- Construction harness (FLEX360, STRATOS) — additional D-ring configurations (dorsal, sternal, hip) for use with positioning and restraint systems in addition to fall arrest. Sternal D-ring is required for use with leading-edge SRLs per ANSI Z359.14.
- Ironworkers harness (FLEX270) — designed for steel erectors requiring maximum D-ring access points, reinforced webbing for abrasion resistance, and compatibility with work positioning on structural steel.
All harnesses in this category are sized and should be selected to fit the individual worker — an improperly sized harness is a fall arrest system failure. Call 1-800-723-3620 for fit and sizing guidance.
Yes. Safe-Fast provides fall protection system inspection services performed by a competent person. OSHA requires that all PFAS components be inspected periodically by a competent person in addition to pre-use inspection by the user. Inspections include visual and functional checks of all harnesses, lanyards, SRLs, anchorages, and connectors, with documented pass/fail records.
Fall protection safety training is also available, covering OSHA requirements, hazard identification, equipment inspection, proper donning procedures, and rescue planning. Call 1-800-723-3620 to schedule an inspection or training.
