Lifting and Rigging
Lifting & Rigging Equipment: Slings, Gantry Cranes & Tie-Downs
Improper lifting and rigging is one of the most common causes of serious workplace injuries — struck-by incidents involving falling loads account for a significant share of construction and industrial fatalities every year. OSHA 29 CFR 1926.251 (construction) and 29 CFR 1910.184 (general industry) govern the design, selection, inspection, and use of rigging equipment for material handling. Key requirements include: rated capacity marking on all rigging hardware, inspection before each use, load angle factors applied to working load limits, and removal from service for damaged or worn components.
Safe-Fast stocks lifting and rigging equipment from REID Lifting and Lift Pro:
- REID PORTAGANTRY® Mobile Gantry Crane US-PGSS — lightweight portable aluminum gantry crane with a maximum safe working load of 11,000 lbs. Manually assembled with four bolts — no tools beyond a torque wrench required. Ideal for equipment removal, motor pulls, and confined space rescue in locations where a fixed overhead crane is not available. Multiple crossbeam height positions. Note: contact Safe-Fast for current pricing on this item.
- Lift Pro Synthetic Slings — polyester web slings with polymer edge-yarn technology that is 2× stronger after abrasion and 2× better at edge cut resistance than standard polyester:
- 2-Ply Eye-Eye Sling — standard two-leg eye-and-eye configuration for straight, choker, and basket hitches. Core yarn warns of wear via color-change indicator. Multiple lengths.
- Single-Ply Endless Sling — continuous loop (endless) design for basket hitch applications where a conventional eye-eye sling would be difficult to position.
- Lift Pro Ratchet Strap Tie-Down Assemblies — Flat Hook Ratchet Straps: 1" and 2" wide polyester ratchet straps for flatbed truck and trailer cargo securement. Commonly used by construction contractors, utilities, and equipment rental operations to secure tools, equipment, and materials on vehicles.
For heavy-lift rigging applications, custom sling configurations, or confined space rescue equipment (tripod systems), also see the Confined Space Rescue category. Call Safe-Fast at 1-800-723-3620 for application guidance or volume pricing on rigging equipment.

Lifting & Rigging — Frequently Asked Questions
Working Load Limit (WLL) — also called Safe Working Load (SWL) — is the maximum load that rigging equipment is designed to lift under ideal conditions. It is the manufacturer's rated capacity and must be marked on all rigging hardware per OSHA 1910.184.
Break strength is the load at which the rigging component will actually fail under laboratory test conditions. Rigging hardware is designed with a safety factor — typically 4:1 or 5:1 — meaning break strength is 4 to 5 times the rated WLL. Never load rigging to its break strength; always operate within the WLL and apply appropriate de-rating factors for hitch configuration and sling angles.
When a sling is used in a basket or two-leg bridle hitch at an angle less than 90° from horizontal, the tension on each sling leg increases significantly — even though the lifted load weight does not change. This is the sling angle factor, and it dramatically reduces the effective WLL:
- 90° (vertical): 100% of rated WLL
- 60°: approximately 87% of rated WLL
- 45°: approximately 71% of rated WLL
- 30°: approximately 50% of rated WLL
Never use slings at angles less than 30° from horizontal — the tension multiplier becomes extreme. OSHA 1910.184 requires riggers to account for sling angle when selecting rigging for a specific lift.
Per OSHA 1910.184(f), synthetic web slings must be inspected before each use for:
- Acid or caustic burns; melting, charring, or weld spatter
- Holes, tears, cuts, or snags; broken or worn stitching in end fittings
- Distortion, broken, or worn fittings
- Missing or illegible identification tags (rated capacity must be marked)
Remove from service immediately if any of these conditions are found. The Lift Pro slings in this category use a core yarn wear indicator — when the outer jacket is damaged sufficiently to expose the inner core yarn, the sling signals that it must be retired.
The REID PORTAGANTRY® is a freestanding, portable aluminum gantry crane that sets up in minutes using four bolts — no tools required beyond a torque wrench. Rated to 11,000 lbs. SWL, it provides a temporary overhead lifting point in locations where a fixed crane does not exist.
Common applications include: pulling motors, gearboxes, and pumps from equipment during maintenance; moving heavy materials in loading bays or warehouses without an overhead crane; and serving as the overhead anchor for confined space rescue tripod or SRL rigging where a structural anchor is unavailable. It disassembles for transport and storage.
