Work Boots, Protective Footwear & Traction Devices
Proper footwear is a critical but often underspecified component of a complete PPE program. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.136 requires protective footwear wherever workers are exposed to foot injuries from falling or rolling objects, objects piercing the sole, or electrical hazards. Beyond basic ASTM impact/compression protection, many industrial environments also demand waterproofing, chemical resistance, slip resistance, cold insulation, or specialized hazard protection such as chainsaw cut resistance.
Safe-Fast's footwear category is organized into two subcategories, with products spanning boots, overshoes, waders, protective covers, and ice traction:
- Boots — safety toe and specialty boots for outdoor, utility, and industrial applications:
- Tingley Badger Boot™ Steel Toe — 100% waterproof neoprene upper with ASTM F2413 M/I/C EH rating. Steel toe, cushioned footbed, extra-wide calf. Available in multiple sizes.
- Tingley Flite® Composite Safety Toe Knee Boot — lightweight composite toe in Aerex® microcellular polymer construction. Chemical-resistant, thermally insulative.
- Muck Arctic Pro Steel Toe Insulated Boot — extreme cold work boot with Bob-Tracker outsole and steel toe for professional outdoor environments.
- Viking® Class 2 Chainsaw Boots VW64-1 — ASTM F1818 chainsaw protection at 24 m/sec, ASTM F2413 Grade 1 steel toe. Required PPE for chainsaw operators.
- Honeywell Servus Steel Toe Rubber Hip Boots — 32" seamless rubber hip boot with steel toe and Heavy Trac tread for outdoor utility and water work.
- Frogg Toggs Amphib Neoprene Bootfoot Cleated Wader — 3.5mm neoprene bib-style wader with 200g Thinsulate insulated boot and cleated outsole.
- Protective Wear — overshoes, boot covers, tacky mats, and traction devices:
- Tingley Workbrutes G2 17" Overshoe — wide-toe PVC overshoe designed to fit over safety-toe boots. Chemical-resistant; available in black and red.
- West Chester 17" Yellow Slush Boot Overshoe — 100% waterproof pull-on overshoe for light to heavy-duty applications. Fits over shoes or boots.
- DuPont Tyvek® 400 Boot Covers — disposable Tyvek boot covers for contamination control in cleanrooms, biohazard areas, and asbestos/chemical abatement. Case of 200.
- ICEtrekkers Diamond Grip — patented diamond-shaped carbide bead ice traction device. Hundreds of biting edges; fits over any work boot. For boilerplate ice to backcountry snow.
- Mid Cleat Stabilicer — one-size-fits-most traction device for intermittent ice conditions. Quick stretch-on application over work boots.
- Tacky Mat 24" × 36" — 30-sheet adhesive contamination-control mat for removing dirt from shoes and equipment wheels at facility entrances. Reduces cleaning costs and prevents dust migration.

Work Boots & Protective Footwear — Frequently Asked Questions
ASTM F2413 is the American standard for performance requirements for foot protection. The marking on a boot's label encodes the protections it has been tested to provide:
- I/75 — Impact resistance rated to 75 foot-pounds (the standard level for most industrial work boots)
- C/75 — Compression resistance rated to 2,500 lbs.
- EH — Electrical Hazard rated; provides secondary protection against open circuits up to 600V
- PR — Puncture resistant sole
- MT — Metatarsal protection
- SD — Static dissipative (controls static buildup)
The Tingley Badger Boot and Viking Chainsaw Boots in this category carry ASTM F2413 M/I/C EH and ASTM F2413 Grade 1 ratings respectively. Always match the ASTM marking to the specific hazards present at your worksite.
Both steel toe and composite toe boots can meet the same ASTM F2413 I/75 impact and C/75 compression ratings, but the materials differ in important ways:
- Steel toe — heavier; excellent crush resistance; conducts temperature (cold in winter, hot in summer); triggers metal detectors. Standard for most construction, manufacturing, and general industrial use. The Tingley Badger Boot and Muck Arctic Pro have steel toes.
- Composite toe — lighter; non-conductive (appropriate for electrical hazard environments and facilities with metal detectors); no thermal conductivity. Made from carbon fiber, Kevlar, or fiberglass. The Tingley Flite® Boot uses a composite safety toe.
For electrical work or environments where EH-rated footwear is combined with electrical isolation requirements, composite toe is the preferred choice since steel toes can create a secondary electrical conduction path if the boot is compromised.
ASTM F1818 is the standard for foot protection for chainsaw users. Chainsaw-rated boots contain layers of cut-resistant material (typically ballistic nylon or Kevlar) in the boot's upper that are designed to clog the chainsaw chain upon contact, rapidly stopping the blade before it reaches the foot.
Chainsaw protection is classified by chain speed tested: Class 1 (16 m/sec) for most recreational and light commercial use; Class 2 (24 m/sec) for professional chainsaw operation. The Viking® Class 2 Chainsaw Boots VW64-1 are rated to ASTM F1818 Mid Class (24 m/sec) and also carry ASTM F2413 Grade 1 steel toe protection — required for professional arborists, logging crews, and utility vegetation management workers.
Rubber overshoes are pull-on waterproof boot covers worn over existing work boots or shoes to provide additional protection against water, mud, chemicals, and contamination without requiring a separate pair of specialty boots. They are commonly used in:
- Wet or muddy environments — construction sites, utility work, agricultural operations, or outdoor events in inclement weather
- Chemical exposure — the Tingley Workbrutes G2 PVC overshoe provides chemical resistance for facilities handling corrosives or solvents
- Over safety-toe boots — the Workbrutes G2 has a wide-toe design that accommodates steel or composite safety-toe boots worn underneath
- Short-term or transition work — workers who move between dry and wet areas without wanting to change footwear entirely
Safe-Fast carries two ice traction devices for workers in winter conditions:
- ICEtrekkers Diamond Grip — a full-coverage traction device with patented diamond-shaped carbide stainless steel beads that bite in all directions. Designed for boilerplate ice, hard-packed snow, and backcountry winter conditions. Fits over most work boot sizes ($49.95).
- Mid Cleat Stabilicer — a one-size-fits-most targeted traction device for lighter ice conditions. Single cleat design stretches quickly over any work boot or shoe for intermittent ice exposure ($27.25).
Slip-and-fall injuries on ice are a leading cause of workplace injuries in cold climates. Traction devices are a low-cost, high-impact control that should be included in any winter outdoor safety program. Remove before entering buildings or on soft surfaces to prevent tripping.
