Traffic Workzone
Traffic Work Zone Equipment: Cones, Signs & Barriers
Roadway work zones are among the most dangerous environments for both workers and motorists. The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) sets federal standards for all traffic control devices used on public roads, including cone sizes, sign retroreflectivity, and work zone device placement. OSHA 29 CFR 1926.201 requires that flaggers wear high-visibility apparel and follow MUTCD or ANSI/ISEA 107 standards. State DOT regulations may impose additional requirements. All traffic control devices in this category are designed to meet or exceed MUTCD performance requirements.
Safe-Fast stocks 22 traffic work zone products from Traffix Devices, Bone Safety, Safety Flag, Presco, and Nightstick. The category is organized under one subcategory and standalone products:
- Cones & Signs — MUTCD-compliant traffic cones, roll-up signs, stop/slow paddles, and associated devices:
- Traffix Enviro-Cones — made from 80% recycled rubber base (qualifies for Green Points) with low-density polyethylene body for superior durability and impact resistance. Available in:
- 18" Enviro-Cone — for non-roadway and low-speed applications
- 28" Enviro-Cone and 28" Slim Enviro-Cone — for roadway work zones below 45 mph
- 42" Grabber (Looper) Cones — MUTCD-required for roads at or above 45 mph; patented handle for easy placement from a moving vehicle; accepts standard barricade lights; rubber bases in 16 and 30 lb
- Retractable Cone Bar 6'–10' Orange/White Reflective — connects between cones to create a visual and physical pedestrian barrier in the work zone; extends from 6 to 10 feet.
- Bone Safety Stop/Slow Paddles — fiberglass mast and FRP sign face; lightweight, durable, and functional at extreme temperatures:
- 18" Non-Reflective for daytime flagging
- 24" Reflective with 84" telescoping handle for day/night high-speed flagging
- Bone Safety 48" Vinyl Roll-Up Signs — UV-stable materials; common MUTCD message options: Non-Reflective ($73.81–$73.83) and Reflective for day/night use.
- Reflective Triangular Flare Kit (3-set) — meets DOT FMVSS 125; no tools required; in hard plastic carry case.
- Elgin Y2K Barricade Light — LED barricade light for cone and barricade tops; impact-absorbing breakaway candle; moisture-proof circuitry.
- Nightstick 1600 Series LED Traffic Wand — for flagger nighttime operations; bright red LED cone; On/Strobe/Off modes.
- 18"×18" HD Knitted Warning Flag w/30" Staff and 18"×18" Mesh Tailgate Flag w/3 Grommets — fluorescent knitted vinyl mesh flags; won't crack, peel, or fray.
- Caution Barricade Tape and Danger Barricade Tape plus Presco Woven Barricade Tape Red/Black — for scene control and hazard zone delineation.
- Traffix Enviro-Cones — made from 80% recycled rubber base (qualifies for Green Points) with low-density polyethylene body for superior durability and impact resistance. Available in:
- Vehicle Mitigation: TrafFix Block Axess Vehicle Mitigation System — portable vehicle mitigation barrier for events and sensitive locations requiring protection from hostile vehicle intrusion. Quick setup without tools. Contact Safe-Fast for pricing and availability.

Traffic Work Zone Equipment — Frequently Asked Questions
The MUTCD (Section 6F) specifies minimum cone heights based on road speed:
- 18" cones: for non-roadway and parking lot applications only — not for use on public roadways as primary traffic control devices
- 28" cones: minimum requirement for roadway work zones where the posted speed limit is below 45 mph
- 36" cones (minimum): required on freeways, expressways, and other roads with posted speed limits at or above 45 mph
The Traffix 42" Grabber (Looper) Cone in this category meets and exceeds the 36" MUTCD requirement for high-speed roadway work zones. Cones must be orange; for nighttime use, cones must meet MUTCD retroreflectivity requirements with appropriate collar sleeves.
A retractable cone bar stretches between two adjacent traffic cones to create a continuous visual and light physical barrier, closing the gap between individual cones. This is particularly useful for:
- Preventing pedestrians from stepping into a hazard zone between cone placements
- Creating a more defined work zone boundary on sidewalks, parking areas, and low-speed roads
- Supplementing cone lines in pedestrian environments where the 20-foot gaps between standard roadway cones leave too much open space
The Traffix Retractable Cone Bar extends from 6 to 10 feet and features orange and white reflective panels for improved visibility.
OSHA 29 CFR 1926.201 requires that flaggers wear high-visibility clothing. The specific requirements reference the MUTCD or ANSI/ISEA 107 standards. Most state DOTs require a minimum of ANSI/ISEA 107 Class 2 for flaggers, with many requiring Class 3 on high-speed roadways or in low-light conditions.
For flagger PPE including hi-vis vests, shirts, and rain gear, see the High Visibility clothing category. For flagging paddles, see the Cones & Signs subcategory — both the 18" non-reflective and 24" reflective Stop/Slow paddle are available.
