Signage & Identification
Safety Signs, Barricade Tape & Work Zone Identification
Effective safety signage communicates hazards, reinforces PPE requirements, and guides both workers and visitors through safe behaviors before incidents occur. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.145 governs accident prevention signs and tags in general industry, specifying color, design, and language requirements for Danger, Warning, Caution, and Notice signs. The current format standard is ANSI Z535, which defines the signal word hierarchy (DANGER, WARNING, CAUTION, NOTICE, SAFETY INSTRUCTION), color codes, and pictogram requirements now accepted as the OSHA-aligned standard.
Safe-Fast stocks 48 signage and identification products across four subcategories, from Accuform Signs, Traffix Devices, Bone Safety, Safety Flag, and Nightstick:

Safety Signs & Work Zone Identification — Frequently Asked Questions
Under ANSI Z535.2 and OSHA 29 CFR 1910.145, signal words convey the severity level of the hazard:
- DANGER (Red/White/Black): a hazardous situation that will result in death or serious injury if not avoided. Used only for the most extreme hazards.
- WARNING (Orange/Black): a hazardous situation that could result in death or serious injury if not avoided.
- CAUTION (Yellow/Black): a hazardous situation that could result in minor or moderate injury, or alert against unsafe practices.
- NOTICE (Blue/White): important information not related to personal injury — e.g., equipment operating instructions, policy notices.
- SAFETY INSTRUCTION (Green/White): general safety information and instructions where no specific hazard is identified.
The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) specifies minimum cone sizes by application:
- 18" cones: acceptable for low-speed (under 45 mph) and non-roadway applications — parking lots, pedestrian areas, indoor environments.
- 28" cones: the standard minimum for roadway work zones where the posted speed limit is below 45 mph.
- 36" or 42" cones (required on freeways and expressways): MUTCD Section 6F requires 36" minimum cones on roadways with speeds at or above 45 mph. The Traffix 42" Grabber Cone meets this requirement.
All roadway-use traffic cones must be orange and, for nighttime use, meet retroreflectivity requirements. The Traffix Enviro-Cones in this category are available with standard 6" collars for retroreflective sheeting.
Caution tape (yellow) indicates a potential hazard that requires awareness and care but does not necessarily prohibit entry. It is used to delineate areas where workers or the public should proceed with caution — excavation zones, wet floors, unstable surfaces, and areas with active overhead work.
Danger tape (red) indicates an immediate hazard with the potential for death or serious injury. It communicates that entry is prohibited for unauthorized personnel — energized equipment areas, active lockout zones, and structural collapse hazards. In LOTO applications, red barricade tape combined with Danger signs reinforces the lockout boundary.
Neither tape provides a physical barrier — they are visual communications only. Physical barriers (guardrails, barricades) are required where falls or equipment impact are actual physical hazards.
