First Aid Kits, AEDs & Workplace First Aid Supplies
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.151(a) requires that employers ensure the ready availability of medical personnel for advice and consultation on matters of employee health, and that adequate first aid supplies be readily available where there is no infirmary, clinic, or hospital near the workplace. In practice, this means a stocked, compliant first aid kit within each work area and trained personnel who know how to use it. The current standard for first aid kit contents is ANSI/ISEA Z308.1-2021, which defines Class A (basic) and Class B (extended) kit contents for general and high-risk workplaces respectively.

OSHA references ANSI/ISEA Z308.1 as guidance on minimum first aid kit contents. The 2021 revision defines two classes: Class A for basic hazard environments (small offices, retail, light manufacturing) and Class B for extended hazard environments (construction, industrial, manufacturing). Kits must be inspected regularly, and depleted or expired items must be replaced promptly.
Under ANSI/ISEA Z308.1-2021:
- Class A kits are designed to address the most common types of workplace injuries — minor cuts, abrasions, burns, and sprains. They contain a basic assortment of bandages, gauze, antiseptic wipes, burn treatment, and a few other items. Suitable for low-hazard workplaces: offices, retail, light assembly environments. - Class B kits contain a broader and larger supply of items, including tourniquets, trauma dressings, and more substantial wound care materials, designed for higher-risk workplaces — construction, manufacturing, utilities, and industrial plants. Kit size should be matched to the number of employees in the work area and the risk level of the work. General guidance:
- Up to 25 workers, low-hazard: 25 Person ANSI A kit — suitable for offices, small shops, and vehicles.
- Up to 50 workers, construction/industrial: 50 Person Contractor ANSI B+ kit
- Up to 100 workers, industrial/manufacturing: 100 Person 3-Shelf Metal Cabinet ANSI B+
- Up to 200 workers, large facility: 200 Person 5-Shelf Metal Cabinet ANSI B
For multi-building facilities, each work area should have its own kit or cabinet accessible within a reasonable travel distance. Consult OSHA 1910.151 and your facility's occupational health consultant for formal guidance.
OSHA does not currently mandate AEDs in most general industry workplaces at the federal level. However, many states have AED requirement laws for specific settings (schools, fitness facilities, large public gatherings), and OSHA's General Duty Clause (Section 5(a)(1)) can apply if an employer knows that sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a recognized hazard and fails to take feasible abatement steps.
The American Heart Association recommends that AEDs be available within a 3–5 minute response time in any setting where workers may be present.
